Climate Change Photo Campaign

Recently, I read Owen Jones’ piece in the Guardian about climate change. The first line is: “It’s the existential threat to our species, and it bores us to tears.” This statement rang true to me. Anthropogenic climate change is arguably the most imminent threat to our world today, yet the general public finds it boring. We recognize its significance, but are not committed to coming up with a plan and following through with our fight against climate change. Do we need to wait until we reach the point of no return? Will we only act when our world is directly confronted with resource scarcity, hazardous weather, and political instability?

Climate change is an immediate threat that should be on the forefront of our global agenda. The fact is that we are already seeing the implications of extreme weather, intensified conflicts, and the exacerbation of poverty caused by global warming. The window of opportunity to markedly mitigate the effects of climate change is closing, and we need to act now. Public opinion has the power to shape the direction and behavior of our country and generate social change. This can’t be an issue that we postpone or look to others to solve. It is an issue that affects us all, and must be correspondingly combatted by each and every one of us.

The goal of this photo campaign was to draw attention to the effects of climate change and encourage HWRHS students to reflect and act on the importance of this issue. As we continue this school year, one of Outreach’s main focuses will be to continue our school’s efforts in reducing our environmental impact and fostering a community of youth who are passionate about saving our planet.
